This has been one of the best salmon seasons we have seen in recent history on the Rogue.
We are still catching salmon, you just need to travel downstream a bit (west of the town of Grants Pass) to below Hog Creek. Salmon fishing on the Upper Rogue near Medford/Shady Cove ended in August and on the Middle Rogue near Grants Pass in September.
Steelhead fishing on the Rogue is going strong.
The Upper Rogue is currently fly only (fly fishing and bug and bubble techniques allowed) until November 1st above the town of Gold Hill (near Medford and upstream to Shady Cove) and bait and tackle fishing below Gold Hill downstream to Grants Pass. October is a great time to fish for steelhead with mild temperatures and a quiet river due to anglers being spread throughout the river system.
In addition, we are now anticipating falls rains. This will open up opportunities for more salmon fishing on the coastal rivers, the Chetco, Elk and Sixes (near Brookings and Port Orford respectively). This is one of the best salmon fisheries Oregon has to offer and is only available a few months of the year.
Keep in mind also in the fall, starting on November 1st regulations change on the Upper Rogue and the use of bait and tackle resumes in the sections that have been fly only for months. Due to this, the 1st weeks of November are productive summer steelhead fishing.
