Springer season is upon us! With 213 spring salmon in the hatchery already and good river and fishing conditions on the lower Rogue we look forward to meaningful numbers of spring salmon arriving over the next few weeks. Migrating salmon head directly upstream to their spawning grounds here on the upper river. The river temperature is ideal for salmon at a cool 52 degrees and the water level has been enough to encourage migration from the mouth of the river all the way to the top.
We will be fishing for king Chinook salmon now through October, with our 2 runs of salmon overlapping mid summer and fishing for summer steelhead beginning in mid July.
It looks like warmer, drier weather is headed our way soon, a perfect time to Fish the Rogue!
A few reminders:
- You may keep hatchery salmon at this time. Wild salmon must be released.
- Trout fishing is closed until May 22nd to protect our migrating steelhead smolts.
- Wild steelhead retention is closed although hatchery steelhead may still be kept.
- With lower water in the side creeks this year, more steelhead are spawning on redds in the main river. Avoid walking, wading or dragging your boat on these redds in shallow tailouts.
- The Hatchery Hole, near the dam is closed to all fishing from April 1st through July 31st and closed to salmon fishing year round.
