While Southern Oregon has not been blessed with much rain this fall, pictured above are some of the coastal salmon caught after the last storm rolled through. This recent batch of rain and snow has coastal rivers flowing again and between the Elk, Sixes and Chetco Rivers there should be some prime fishing in the next few weeks. These coastal rivers produce some of our biggest and best salmon of the year with each season producing fish weighing in the 40 pound plus range.
According to the Elk River Salmon Hatchery, several hundred Chinook entered the hatchery last night and the Elk is currently at 4.5 feet and blue green in color.
If you're looking to fish the Rogue here in the Medford/Grants Pass area, there are still plenty of hatchery steelhead to be caught in the upper river and according to the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife Recreation Report, there has been a decent push of Coho silver salmon at the Cole M. Rivers hatchery located north of Shady Cove.
