Winter steelhead have arrived at the Cole Rivers Hatchery just north of the town of Shady Cove on the Upper Rogue River.
Winter steelhead numbers have increased quickly over the past few weeks. The river has been high throughout the system but it looks like by mid to late March the river should drop to an ideal fishing level and will be the peak of the winter steelhead season on the Upper and Middle Rogue. The high water and lower river temperatures will also encourage spring Chinook (king) salmon to return to the river, likely an early return to the Upper Rogue, as we have seen in the last few years. With ample water, salmon will not hold long in the lower river and will migrate quickly to the top.
I would expect to see the 1st spring salmon in the Upper Rogue by April.
- March through April We will be fishing for winter steelhead on the Rogue River near Shady Cove/Medford/Grants Pass.
- When conditions permit, we will be fishing the South Umpqua River near Canyonville, also for winter steelhead.
- April through September We will be fishing for spring king salmon from April through mid summer and for our summer/fall run of king salmon August and September on the Upper Rogue River just north of the town of Medford.
